Group Promotions Requirements

Training Groups

TRAINING GROUPS

We have 5 training groups. They are:

  • Whirlwinds - 10 & under beginners
  • Storm - 11 & under advanced
  • Lightning - 11 & over intermediates
  • Typhoons - 11 & over advanced
  • Hurricanes - 11 & over seniors
  • Cyclones - Senior advanced

When swimmers sign up with the club, they are placed in a training group by the coaches, after which time swimmers earn their place in a training group based on a series of skills and test sets. The criteria for each group is outlined below. Group promotion or demotion (when necessary) is done in September January and May.

Whirlwinds

Whirlwinds – (10 & under Beginners)

10 & under swimmers who are in the early stages of stroke development and competitive swimming.

Required Skills
  • Should be able to swim 50 m unaided.
  • Should be able to tread for 1 minute.
  • Should be able follow coach’s instruction
Recommended Training Schedule
  •  Attend training 1 - 3 times per week.
  • Length of training session- 1 hour
  •  Should be involved in other extra-curricular activities.
  • Training distance- from 500 to 2000 meters per session at the discretion of the Coach
Required Equipment
  • Swim Suit
  • Towel
  • Goggles
  • Kickboards
  • Water bottle
  • Sneakers

Storms

Storms – (11 & under Advanced)

11 & under swimmer who have learned the basic skills of competitive swimming. This group will continue to develop skills for advanced swimming and competition through discipline, additional exposure to stroke technique and training skills.

Required Skills
  • Should be able to do the three strokes legally for 50m.
  • Should be able to do 50 m of one stroke under 1.00 minute
  • Should be able to demonstrate two drills.
  • Should be able to demonstrate a start from the block.
  • Should be able to demonstrate a legal flip turn.
  • Should be able to kick 300 meters in 9 minutes
  • Should be able to swim 400m in 10 minutes
Recommended Training Schedule
  •  Attend training 3 - 4 times per week.
  • Length of training- 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes
  • Should be involved in other extra-curricular activities.
  • Training Distance 1000 to 3000 meters per session at the discretion of the coach

  • Pull Buoy

Lightning

Lightning – (11 & over Intermediates)

The young swimmer/athlete will be introduced to an intensive training environment where they will develop advanced skills for competition.

Required Skills:
  • Should be able to demonstrate all turns legally for 100m.
  • Should be able to demonstrate four strokes legally for 100m.
  • Must have competed in 2 - 200 meter events.
  • Should be able to demonstrate four drills.
  • Should be able to demonstrate four finishes.
  • Should be able to take their heart rate readings.
  • Should able to read the clock.
  • Should be able to kick 400m in 8:30mins
  • Should be able to do 6 x 200m freestyle under 4:30
Recommended Training Schedule
  • Attend training 3-6 times per week.
  • Morning Training may be scheduled
  • Length of Training - one hour and thirty minutes to two hours 
  • Should be involved in other extra-curricular activities.
  • Training distance- 2500 to 4500 meters per session at the discretion of the Coach .
Wellness & Recovery

Lightning swimmers will be training at increased intensity and will become at risk of injury if they are do not adopt a proper, wellness, recovery and nutrition program. Hydration and post work out stretching should be closely supervised by coach and parents.

Typhoons

Typhoons- (12 & over Advanced)

The athlete who is multi-talented. This athlete strives to be a well-rounded individual while aiming to compete at the highest level locally and regionally. Training is intensive and goal oriented.

Required Skills
  • Attend 4-7 training sessions a week.
  • Should make minimum of one “A” times in any 200 meter event
  • Must compete in an event 400 meters and above
  • Should be able to do 10 X 200m under 3.45 mins
  • Kicking 400 m in 8 mins
Recommended Training Schedule
  • Attend training 4-7 times per week.
  • Morning training is recommended
  • Length of Training- one hour and thirty minutes to two hours
  • Training distance- 3500 to 6000 meters per session at the discretion of the coach
Wellness & Recovery
  • Typhoons are responsible for their own wellness, recovery and nutrition program.
Required Equipment
  • Kickboards, Pull Buoy, Fins, Snorkel, Water bottle, Sneakers, Paddles ( at coaches recommendation)

Hurricanes

 Hurricanes – (12 & over Seniors)

Hurricane swimmers are focused on achieving excellence in swimming at the National, Regional and International level.

Required Skills
  • Should maintain ‘AA’ times in any 200 meter event
  • Should maintain at least 1 ‘AAA’ time in any 100 meter event
  • Must compete in 400 IM, 200 Fly, 800 or 1500 Free
  • Must be able to 10x200 under 3mins (aerobic base)
  • Kicking 400m in 7:20mins
  • Attend a minimum of 6 training sessions a week.
  • Training schedule must include “double” sessions – Morning and Afternoon training combined.
  • Advanced Land Training, with advanced level gym instructor
Mandatory Training Schedule
  • Minimum 6 pool sessions & 2 Gym Sessions per week
  • Training distance- from 5000 to 6500 meters per session
  • Morning training mandatory
Wellness & Recovery
  • Hurricanes are responsible for their own wellness, recovery and nutrition program.
